My experience with Weight Watchers has been very positive. Following their program has resulted in my 54 pound weight loss.
When I first entered a Weight Watchers meeting here in St. Petersburg, Florida, I was embarrassed and somewhat hesitant about stepping up on the scale amidst so many others….especially women.
I had always prided myself on looking worthy and making a proper, healthy looking appearance, especially to appeal to the ladies. What had happened to me? Quite simply I had gained way too considerable weight for my height and age, 5feet eleven inches broad, age 58. My weight was 230 pounds.
How did this happen? Simple. I ate too considerable, drank too much beer and did not fetch enough exercise.
At the time of my weight gain I was an in-home salesman which involved extensive automobile disappear throughout the West sail of Florida. I mature to stop at McDonald’s for an Egg McMuffin and a coffee with cream and two sugars to start my day on the road. They tasted so good, eventually I expanded to 2 Egg McMuffins each morning. My waistline expanded as well.
Then there was the beer….aah, light beers, granted, but one cold one lead to a second and many times a third at the end of the day at home….no driving while drinking ever.
But back to the Weight Watchers first meeting. After weighing in I sat down, in the rear of the meeting room and listened to the meeting leader. As I remember she was talking about portion control and used several examples of everyday items to wait on measure portion sizes.
For example, a tennis ball was said to be about the right size of an apple; meat serving to fit in the palm of your hand with no overlapping and peanut butter, effect sure your tablespoon serving was a level tablespoon serving…not rounded.
After the meeting, I was invited to sit in with three other “newbies” for a get acquainted session with the meeting leader. We were told that we would assign points to the foods we consumed depending on our current weight. To help in this we were given a small, easy to use Points Finder calculator.
To use the Points Finder we would look on the Nutritional Heed on the food we were going to eat and look at the calories per serving, total amount of dietary fiber and total beefy per serving which would then note us the amount of points involved for a serving.
Total points allowed each day was pre-determined by our initial weight figure. The more you weighed the more points you could have in a day. As you lost weight, you would have fewer points. We were directed to characterize the food and beverages we consumed each day and the points total in a Food Journal.
Here’s an example: one half cup of Quaker Oats Quick 1 Dinky Oatmeal is 150 calories; 4 grams of dietary fiber and 3 grams of total fat.Total points from the Points Finder is 3.
I also found out that Weight Watchers offered a very handy points directory called the Complete Food Companion with listings of over 18,000 foods including meats, poultry, cheeses, desserts, beverages and even listings by Ethnic and Regional food favorites and the points for each.
The meetings I attended each week were designed to educate me in proper eating habits and they were also very motivational. I discovered that it was easier to lose weight by being with others who were struggling with the same weight problem I had. It is not easy to lose weight by yourself.
I faithfully attended each weekly meeting and missed only one due to the flu.
At the end of eleven and a half months I had gone from 230 pudgy, unhealthy pounds to an energetic healthy 176.
I had to buy new trousers, shirts and underwear in reduced sizes. My meeting leader suggested to all we weight losers, to achieve one of our former “over weight garments” as a reminder that we never again wanted to wear that size.
I am now a Lifetime member of Weight Watchers. I go to a meeting once a month to weigh in. I am happy to report that I have not gained any weight and it has been three years now.
And a final note, I still keep a daily food journal so that I know what is going into my body and I weigh myself regularly each week.
If you are struggling with weight gain, you may wish to consider joining Weight Watchers. I am very happy with their program and what it did for me.
